Home Remedies for Head Lice

1. GARLIC

Garlic can effectively eliminate all the lice from the head since it has a strong smell. This suffocates the lice and kills them. It also has an anti-bacterial property that prevents infection.

How to Use?
  • Grind eight to 10 garlic cloves into a paste and mix in two to three teaspoons of lime juice
  • Apply the mixture thoroughly onto the scalp
  • Leave it on for a half an hour and then rinse the hair thoroughly with hot water
  • Alternatively, you can make a thick paste by combining fresh garlic juice with some cooking oil, lemon extract, green tea and some shampoo and conditioner
  • Coat the hair thoroughly with the paste
  • Cover the scalp with a towel or shower cap for about a half an hour
  • Wash the hair with a mild shampoo
  • Repeat this remedy on a weekly basis for one to two months

2. OLIVE OIL

Olive oil is also useful in eradicating head lice completely. It smothers and kills the lice ultimately.

How to Use?
  • Apply any type of olive oil to the hair generously before going to bed
  • Put a shower cap or towel on the head and cover it
  • In the morning, comb out the tiny parasites and
  • Wash the hair with some herbal shampoo containing tea tree oil
  • Another option is to mix one-half cup of olive oil with the one-half cup of conditioner and add some liquid soap to it
  • Apply this solution onto the hair and leave it on for an hour
  • Rinse out the hair and apply conditioner
  • Comb the hair thoroughly to remove the dead lice
  • Repeat this remedy again after a week to get best results

3. SALT

Salt can be used to eradicate head lice through desiccation. It is very effective in clearing the scalp and prevent the lice from reproducing.

How to Use?
  • Mix one-quarter cup of salt and one-quarter cup of vinegar thoroughly
  • Gently spray the solution onto the hair so that it becomes slightly wet
  • Put on a shower cap and leave it for about two hours
  • Then wash and condition the hair
  • Repeat this every three days to get positive results

4. BABY OIL

Baby oil is an easy treatment to get rid of head lice. It suffocates the lice and ultimately kills them. While combing, these lice smother out easily.

  • Apply some baby oil on the hair
  • Comb the hair slowly so that lice start falling
  • Then wash the hair with laundry detergent and hot water
  • Before bed, put some white vinegar on the hair
  • Cover the head with a shower cap or towel and leave it on overnight
  • In the morning, wash the hair with regular shampoo and then apply some conditioner
  • Repeat this process for at least three to four days to get positive results

5. PETROLEUM JELLY

Petroleum jelly is effective in killing the lice as it has a stifling effect on the roaming lice.

  • Apply a thick layer of petroleum jelly to the scalp before going to bed
  • Cover the head tightly with a shower cap or towel
  • Leave it on overnight
  • In the morning, use baby oil to remove the petroleum jelly

  • Repeat this several nights in a row

6. TEA TREE OIL

Tea tree oil has an antiseptic property that acts as a natural insecticide. It is an effective treatment for the head lice.

  • Mix together one teaspoon of tea tree oil, one ounce of natural shampoo, and three tablespoons of coconut or olive oil
  • Apply the solution gently throughout the hair
  • Cover your head with a shower cap or towel
  • Leave the head covered for a half an hour and then rinse thoroughly with hot water
  • Finally, comb through the hair while it is still wet to remove the dead lice
  • Do not apply tea tree oil directly to the scalp
  • The above home remedies are tried and tested and found to be effective in eradicating head lice completely.
  • It must be followed for a few days or weeks consistently so that results can be seen.
